Entrepreneur / REVIEWED RESEARCH GUIDE

A person, a company and a fund are three different owners.

Keep the legal reporting entity attached to every investment claim.

A familiar name is an index, not an account

A public figure may be associated with companies, funds and personal investments at the same time. Those relationships help people discover records. They do not make the associated entities interchangeable.

Before using a number, ask whose report it came from. An institutional disclosure describes that institution’s reported positions. A company balance-sheet item belongs to the company. A first-person statement has the evidence and limits of that statement.

Company ownership does not automatically become personal ownership

An executive’s influence over a company does not make every asset on its balance sheet a personal investment. Conversely, a personal statement about an asset does not establish that the company holds it. If two owners are mentioned in the same interview, retain two separate attributions.

The same discipline applies to funds. A fund’s complete holdings table can still omit assets outside that fund and says nothing by itself about the manager’s private accounts. Do not combine the fund with a corporate treasury to manufacture a person’s total allocation.

Build the caption around the entity

  • Name the reporting or speaking owner.
  • Explain the person’s association only as far as the cited evidence supports.
  • State the record type and date.
  • Keep unknown private assets out of totals and percentages.

Avoid implied decision-making

A person’s association with an institution does not identify the decision-maker behind a particular position. Historical managers and founders can remain useful search labels after responsibilities change. A record about an institution should not be rewritten as “this person bought” without separate supporting evidence.

Open the owner and scope fields before copying a quotation. The extra words may make a headline less dramatic, but they make the claim easier to defend and the evidence easier for a reader to inspect.

Follow the evidence

References support the source definitions and dated examples. They do not establish private account access or permission to reproduce an entire external publication.

  1. SEC Form 13F reporting instructions
  2. Dated media attribution distinguishing personal and company statements
