Investor / REVIEWED RESEARCH GUIDE

A bigger portfolio weight does not necessarily mean a purchase.

Keep share quantities, market values and percentage-point changes separate.

Three numbers, three different questions

Reported quantity describes an exposure in the source’s units. Reported value describes its valuation at a reporting date. Portfolio weight describes that value relative to the denominator used by the report or calculation. These numbers are related, but they are not interchangeable.

A security can gain portfolio weight while its share count stays constant. Its price may have changed, the rest of the portfolio may have moved, or other investments may have been sold. A weight increase alone does not establish an additional purchase.

Describe quantities and weights with different language

  • For comparable quantities, state the absolute difference and, when the previous quantity is positive, the percentage change.
  • For two weights, report the difference in percentage points. A move from 10% to 12% is two percentage points.
  • For a new position, do not divide by zero or invent an infinite growth rate. State that it newly appears in the compared disclosure.
  • Keep equity-portfolio weight separate from a percentage of personal wealth.

Check the denominator

Two tables can disagree slightly because one rounds values or weights. Recalculate from the complete original table when that is the chosen method, label the calculation and preserve its inputs. Do not silently mix a rounded aggregator weight with an exact original total.

Options, cash, bonds and other instruments can have different reporting treatment. Use the units and coverage actually attached to the source. A pie chart should never create the impression that a partial disclosure is a complete personal asset allocation.

A useful creator check

Before publishing a sentence containing “increased,” decide whether you mean more shares, a higher reported market value or a larger percentage of the disclosed portfolio. Replace vague wording with the exact metric and reporting dates. The change highlights on this site classify comparable quantities; weight movements remain a separate field.
